This is my opinion about the ranking of the call of duty games I have played. Do you agree? I think many will be surprised with where I put COD4.
1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Simply the best COD game ever made, great balance, great killstreaks and lobby Dedicated servers, it just worked.
And I am pretty good at it, which helps. I think Black Ops 3 is going to be the new number one after it comes out.
2. Call of Duty: World at War
Strangely enough, this was my first COD game I player, even before COD4.
Simple, great maps, great guns.
3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Probs the most fun I've mad within the clan at its peak, this is when CC destroyed public matches.
Only annoying thing was a support streak Stealth Bomber...
4. Call of Duty 4
The original classic. It had flaws though, Stopping power was the only perk used really..
Can't forget the full lobbys on the Broadcast S&D server, good times...
5. Call of Duty: Black Ops
A good all round game, and it had a server browser which was great. Nuketown is my fav map of all time.
Issue is that SMGS are underpowered apart from the Ak74u.
6. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Killstreaks suck, and are hard to get, everyone has a jetpack..
7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
The most flawed and frustrating game every made, One man army, Op Exposives, P2P NETWORKING?????
It also was the most hacked game on steam at the time.
8. Call of Duty: Ghosts
Simply garbage, in every way....

At the beginning it was great, very fresh for the time. Then came along the grenade launchers and danger close.

As for the early Call of Duty games, they were very skill oriented (and nobody played 3 since it never released on PC). Call of Duty 1 (which was division supported) was a game more akin to the early Battlefield series games as opposed to the type of game that Call of Duty became.
The yearly releases really hurt each games' longevity (although I'm sure it helps the bottom line). Even though a game like Modern Warfare 2 is fun, too many folks simply abandoned it when the next game (Black Ops 1) released even though that game had critically severe bugs (Black Ops 1 had a very bad audio issue that caused extreme lag and crashes on most people's PCs... oh well, time to abandon MW2!).
The yearly replacement cycle on CoD games isn't too bad except some folks never upgrade (and thus don't move to the new division) and we couldn't gain enough new members to offset losses. Battlefield had the same problem (and ironically stopped releasing games as quickly right after we lost support for the series).
Anyway, while Black Ops 3 seems interesting (and I will certainly play the beta), I'm not sure how many people are playing the latest CoD games as opposed to people who gave up on the upgrade treadmill a while back.
